A classically styled sub-hilt knife engineered with supreme elegance. Exotic in every way from it's full-tang hand-rubbed linen Micarta handle, to it's individual Nickel Silver sub-hilt design (and of course, that wonderful double-edged blade geometry)

Most double edged knives are poorly made and dangerous to the user. Cold Steel is well aware of this fact and their Black Bear Classic attempts to turn a great idea into an even better knife.

I recently got my own Black Bear Classic and here are my thoughts:

What I like about the knife:

1. My blade came hair shaving sharp right out of the box. VG-1 San Mai III steel is great because it has a hard inner core, which helps it to hold it's edge.

The outer layers are softer steel and give the knife rust resistance and flexibility.

2. Double Edge means double the chance to cut yourself. Cold Steel uses two hilts on this knife, which are made from 300 series stainless steel. This is the perfect way to protect your fingers from slipping up unto the blade.

3. Both edges are hollow ground and beautifully polished giving the BBC a custom knife-like appearance.

4. The Micarta handle is smooth and sexy while being durable enough to last a lifetime.

5. Not only is this knife pretty to look at, but the hard plastic sheath is rugged enough to be carried overseas for military use or even camping/wilderness survival.

What I didn't like:

The Black Bear Classic is one of my favorite Cold Steel knives in every way possible. I have nothing negative to say about it.

Overall:

With avarage UK retail value of £340, the Black Bear Classic is not your everyday knife. It is truly beautiful enough to put on display and wow your friends, while being strong enough to use for almost any task that you can imagine.

This classic sub-hilt design fighter was first developed by Bob Loveless, one of the founding members of the knifemaker’s guild. It’s perhaps the quintessential combat knife. Its blade offers excellent reach and incredible penetration with very little physical effort. The sub hilt practically eliminates the possibility of the hand being dislodged or coming into contact with the blade. Plus, the sub hilt facilitates rapid and effortless withdrawal after insertion. Versions of this design are offered by hundreds of custom knife makers at premium prices. Therefore we thought it was about time to offer premium sub-hilt performance at a more reasonable price, so we designed the Black Bear Classic. Black Bear Classic: Tactical Knives Black Bear Classic: Tactical Knives We use the same VG-1 San Mai III® blade that is found in our famous Tanto series. The blades are perfectly heat treated and a double grind is expertly applied. Then the surface of the blade is polished to a beautiful satin finish, and the edges are honed and buffed to hair shaving sharpness! The black linen Micarta scales are fastened to the blade tang by 6 stainless pins and expertly hand shaped and contoured. Then the handle, including the 300 series stainless guard and sub hilt is buffed to a lustrous shine that will rival the finest custom knives! The Black Bear comes complete with a Secure-Ex® sheath.
